Bones and Coins Dungeon Rooms
Eight rooms, local bonuses, and why you should not rush the next tile set.
The full Steam build of Bones and Coins ships eight dungeon rooms, each with its own enemies, loot table, and challenge. Official copy is clear on the count and vague on the names. Public footage only reliably names the opening catacomb and Rusty Mines. This walkthrough tells you how rooms work as a system so you can train them in the right order instead of collecting empty tiles.
A room is a save file for density
Demo v0.8.0 (1 June 2026) added a dungeon room level system. Each room tracks its own XP bar along the bottom of the HUD. Screenshots from later builds show values like 349 / 3200 on an early tile set and 8672 / 25600 on a later one. That bar is not account level. Leaving a room does not take its bonuses with you the way a skill tree node does.
The same patch stopped rooms from growing without a ceiling and added a max skeleton limit tied to room size. Playtesters had complained that long sessions ran out of skeletons. If your current room feels dead, you are usually missing spawn-count nodes or you hopped to a fresh catacomb whose local level is still zero.
How a torch run maps onto a room
- Pick a room from town.
- Start Looting drops you on an isometric island of tiles.
- Hover the torch, let heroes auto-attack, sweep items.
- Torch timer expires or you hit End Looting.
- Room XP ticks. Repeat until the local bonus layer feels fat, then consider the next unlock.
How to Play covers the HUD. This page covers the decision: stay or move.
Stay when packs still fill the island and coin-per-torch is rising. Move when the tree offers a new room and your income nodes can stock it. Rusty Mines, named in demo footage as an unlock, is the first extra loot table most players will see. Treat it as a new drop list, not as a story beat you must rush.
Enemies and why nine unique types matter
The store page promises nine unique enemies, each with exclusive drops. Trailer comments already joke about the angry skeleton shield-bearer. Until a complete bestiary is published, assume each later room introduces at least one new skeleton variant and that those variants exist to feed the Blacksmith, not to be a raid boss. Exclusive drops are why loot and economy tells you not to sell unidentified shinies on sight.
You do not “beat” a room in the Souls sense. You out-scale it. A room is finished when its XP bar and your tree make the next catacomb the better coin printer. If a pack still deletes a naked Barbarian, you left too early.
Room bonuses, music, and Expeditions
Developer replies during the January playtest said each dungeon room would have its own bonuses — extra loot, power-ups — unlocked by playing that room. Demo v0.8.0 shipped the structure. Dynamic room music arrived in the same notes so you can hear that you changed tilesets.
The August 2026 Steam post adds Expeditions as a full-game layer: extra challenges and rewards on top of the eight-room crawl. At launch, treat Expeditions as optional pressure once the core eight are printable, not as a replacement for room XP. Exact Expedition modifiers were not listed in that announcement, so this wiki will not invent a modifier table.
Suggested unlock order (system, not spoilers)
- Train room one until spawn-count and coin value are online and the Barbarian lives comfortably. See Getting Started.
- Unlock the next offered room (Rusty Mines in demo language) only after item-chance or chests exist, so the new table can actually drop.
- Alternate: one sitting of room XP, one sitting of tree purchases, one sitting of Guild work.
- Do not open a third room while two rooms are still skinny. Local bonuses stack with your global tree; empty rooms do not.
- When five-slot blessings come online, revisit early rooms. They become coin farms, not content you outgrew.
Length and pacing
Official notes say an optimized playthrough is about four to five hours, with more time if you theorycraft parties. That budget only works if rooms are trained, not speedrun. A four-hour player who skipped room XP will hit a wall that looks like a hero problem and is actually a density problem. Check the bottom bar before you fire the Shaman.
Late HUD shots show room indices in the 8–9 range with large XP denominators. Use those as a reminder that the full eight-room list is meant to be lived in, not ticked. Pair this page with the build tier list when a new tileset asks for a different party, and with Updates when a patch retunes caps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many dungeon rooms are in Bones and Coins?
Eight in the full Steam release, each with unique enemies and loot. Public footage names Rusty Mines as an early unlock; other official names were not listed in the launch notes.
What is the XP bar at the bottom of the screen?
Per-room experience added in demo v0.8.0. It unlocks bonuses for that catacomb and does not replace the global skill tree.
Why did my room run out of skeletons?
Older builds could starve late. v0.8.0 added a max skeleton cap tied to room size and better late-session flow. Buy spawn-count nodes and keep training the local XP bar.
Should I rush every room as soon as it unlocks?
No. Train the current room until packs stay dense. New rooms start with a thin bonus layer. See Getting Started for the first-hour version of this advice.
